Chapter Ten
After the body of Lonnie Jones was hauled away, Rita and Rhonda watched Billy drive Tori's RV across the rainy fairgrounds and safely make it to the main road. Billy forced the RV to let out a loud honk, waved his hand out into the rain, and cautiously drove away with Tori and Zach on board. âThere they go,â Rita said, staring out the front of the main circus tent.
Rhonda nodded. âTori will be safe with Billy and Zach,â she promised her worried sister. âBilly can shoot a wing off a fly, and Zach isn't too bad of a shot himself.â
Rita turned away from the opening and scanned the interior of the circus tent. âRhonda, I'm going to call it a day. No one working at this circus is going to talk to us, not after Lonnie Jones was shot and killed. And whoever the killer isâ¦â Rita shook her head. âIt's obvious the killer is standing on higher ground than we are.â
âRita,â Brad began to object, chewing on a damp cigar and resembling an old western sheriff who was preparing to go gun-to-gun with some dangerous outlaw. âYouââ
âBrad,â Rita complained, âI'm cold, wet, and hungry. Those three ingredients do not mix well together, even though those three ingredients have been stuffed in the same bowl and mixed together throughout the centuries. I'm going back into town, getting a bite to eat, and spending the rest of the day at the bakery doing some police work.â
Brad began to fuss, but Rhonda held up a stern hand. âRita is right, Brad,â she fussed. âLonnie Jones is dead. No one is going to talk to us. There's nothing we can do at this creepy circus except chase our tails. Also, whoever the killer is, he or she has the upper groundâwe don't. A good cop knows when to retreat.â
âAnd leave this circus free to break apart or vanish into thin air?â Brad barked.
âLeave a watch team stationed at the main entrance,â Rita ordered Brad. âRhonda and I will come back tomorrow when this rain passes and after we've had time to do some serious thinking.â She scanned the shadowy tent again. âBrad, you can't catch a crazy clown by laughing at the lions.â
âWhat?â Brad asked, confused. âRita, talk clear to me.â
Ritaâs eyes continued to dart around the tent as her mind struggled to understand the illusions being thrown at her. âI'll explain later.â She sighed, took Rhonda's hand, and walked out into the rain before Brad could object. âLet's go to Chick-Fil-A, get a bite to eat, and then go back to the bakery.â
âSounds like a plan,â Rhonda said, relieved. She followed Rita back to her parked SUV, climbed into the passenger seat, and buckled her seat belt. âI want a spicy chicken sandwich,â she told Rita as soon as her sister was safely sitting behind the steering wheel.
âI want a chicken deluxe sandwich with a side of salty waffle fries and a hot coffee,â Rita said. She brought the SUV to life and drove away from the rainy fairgrounds, leaving a nightmarish scream frozen in time.
